As Border Patrol Agents protecting the Rio Grande Valley Sector face overwhelming incursions, a caravan moves north through Mexico carrying more than 1,200 illegal immigrants planning to overrun them.
The Rio Grande sector has faced rising covert border crossings to the point the under-staffed and under-funded agency can no longer maintain even the semblance of control. They lead all areas in Unaccompanied Alien Children, Family Unit Aliens and total illegal immigrant apprehensions.
The February statistics show a brazen escalation of illegal crossings. The Rio Grande sector stopped nearly 10,000 illegals, according U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The vast majority travel from Central America, primarily Guatemala and Honduras. More than 1,300 were unaccompanied minors.
Chris Cabrera, vice president of National Border Patrol Council Local 3307, reportedly said the volume of illegal traffic has risen significantly when compared to the last two Februaries. Some see the increase as a sign that immigrants are aware that American Democrats have stymied the presidents goal of securing the border.
“A wall for this sector is necessary and needs to happen now,” Border Patrol Agent Cabrera reportedly said. “Walls will take time to build but there are things we need to do now, in the interim, to improve border security in this sector.”
Agents are not only confronted with an unmanageable influx of illegal and criminal immigrants, their personal safety has come under fire. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data, more than 230 agents have been physically assaulted by illegals in just six months.
Southern Border Showdown
With reports of the 1,300-strong caravan careening toward the American border, U.S.-Mexico relations have hit a boiling point. News reports and social media posts indicate that Mexican officials supported the Central Americans, knowing full well they plan to assail the U.S. border. The incident has become something of an international showdown.
The large group, organized by Pueblo Sin Fronteras (People Without Borders), has reportedly taunted Pres. Trump, claiming he can do nothing to stop them from reaching U.S. soil and claiming asylum. The president has rattled his political saber mightily on Twitter, letting Mexican officials know they “had better be stopped” before reaching America’s southern border. Many recognize this as a less than subtle threat that Pres. Trump could scuttle the ongoing NAFTA negotiations, impose harsh tariffs and economic sanctions. Many believe he is considering stopping aid to Honduras as well.
While there have been some indications the caravan of more than 1,300 has been dispersed, other reports point to an undeterred mass breaking into smaller groups to attempt dead-of-night crossings. Either way, Pres. Trump has sent reinforcements.
National Guard To Defend Southern Border
On Wednesday, April 4, Pres. Trump took matters into his own hands. Unhappy with the GOP-majority Senate’s reluctance to impose a 51-vote “nuclear option” and ram through the approximate $25 billion the Department of Homeland Security requires to secure the border, he signed an Executive Proclamation to deploy troops.
Pres. Trump becomes the third consecutive president to call upon the National Guard to restore order. Pres. George W. Bush and Pres. Barak Obama were both prompted to use soldiers due to inadequate border protections and too few field agents. Recently appointed Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen indicated that deployment would occur immediately after the president signed the proclamation due to the rising dangers agents face daily.
“Despite a number of steps this administration has taken…we continue to see unacceptable levels of illegal drugs, dangerous gang activity transnational criminal organizations and illegal immigration flow across our border,” Nielsen reportedly said.
“Traffickers and smugglers know that these individuals cannot under U.S. law be easily removed in an expeditious way back to their country of origin and so they exploit the loophole,” she reportedly said a White House press conference.
“We will not allow illegal immigration levels to become the norm,” she said. “More than 1,000 people a day, 300,000 a year violating our sovereignty as a nation will never be acceptable to this president.”
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions supported the effort, promising to bring his office’s powers to bear.
“The Department of Justice fully supports the efforts of the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security announced today to secure our border,” Sessions reportedly said.” I will soon be announcing additional Department of Justice initiatives to restore legality to the southern border.”
