It turns out that Captain America isn’t so American in his ideology – at least the actor who plays him in the Marvel franchise of films isn’t.
In a recent Esquire interview, Chris Evans attacked and belittled a large portion of the fan base that made him famous.
When asked about Trump’s electoral victory, Evans replied, “I feel rage. I feel fury. It’s unbelievable. People were just so desperate to hear someone say that someone is to blame. They were just so happy to hear that someone was angry. Hear someone say that Washington sucks. They just want something new without actually understanding.”
When Chris Evans isn’t attacking vast portions of his fans, he’s busy attacking the leader that they voted into power. Lately, Evans’ Twitter account has been a firestorm of insults against the president. Among other things, Evans has called the leader of the free world “disgusting”, “ignorant”, and “a piece of trash”.
Of course, Evans is far from an outlier in Hollywood today. Unfortunately, the days where actors just did what they were paid to do rather than using their platform to aggressively push an agenda are long gone. The worst part is that, in a day and age where celebrities are idolized like never before, people often attribute to them knowledge and authority they simply do not have.
The ability to put on a Captain America costume and deliver a convincing performance in no way whatsoever makes one qualified to have any influence on U.S. politics. Given a large platform and a highly inflated sense of self-importance, though, actors such as Chris Evans do not hesitate to push their agenda at every opportunity they get. And when it comes to Marvel celebrities pushing left-wing propaganda, Evans is not alone.
Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner (the Hulk) in the Marvel films, and Scarlet Johansson, who plays Black Widow, have both done their fair share of grandstanding over liberal policies and institutions, most notably Planned Parenthood.
Johansson spoke out about the organization that, at the time of their one hundred-year anniversary in 2016, had killed 6,803,782 unborn babies, saying, “As most of you know, Planned Parenthood has been under attack for many years now for another service they thankfully offer, providing a safe place for legal abortions.”
Joss Whedon, the director behind many of the Marvel films took it one step further, calling Planned Parenthood a “beacon of hope” in a video he produced which amounted to little more than a tribute to America’s largest provider of abortions.
Sometimes, though, the agenda-pushing the Hollywood left are now known for crosses the line even for those among their own number. If you’ve been following recent news, you likely have seen the story surrounding the severe backlash standup comedian Kathy Griffin is encountering over her photo shoot in which she is seen holding a fake, severed head of President Trump.
Thankfully, there’s at least some sense of morality and justice left in the world; Griffin faced intense bipartisan criticism for the photo, and was even fired by CNN over her actions.
For celebrities such as Chris Evans, though, who voice the same hate and vitriol for anyone they disagree with in a slightly less appalling manner, the consequences of their actions are less immediate. There is no major backlash for Evans’ name-calling attacks on the president, and no threat of him losing his cushy status among the Hollywood elite.
Nevertheless, if there’s one thing that recent events have shown us it’s that there is a silent majority in this nation that will only tolerate actions such as those exhibited by Evans and his cronies for so long.
For Kathy Griffin, it didn’t take much backlash for her to start quickly walking back her actions and profusely apologizing for the error of her ways. Perhaps when Chris Evans finally starts seeing resistance from the fans he seems so quick to alienate and belittle, he’ll cut down on the attacks and intolerance as well and get back to focusing on the only thing he does well – acting.
After all, people in the United States are only going to put up with un-American Captain America for so long.
