Democrats Are Delusional About James Comey

In a shocking move on Tuesday, President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, who was just three years in to his 10-year term with the agency. While some observers could say this was a long time coming for the scandal-ridden bureau, Democrats in Washington, D.C. and the media are already comparing this to Watergate.

This not only makes no sense – it reveals Democratic lawmakers are unapologetic hypocrites.

During the infamous Saturday Night Massacre, Nixon cleaned house by firing independent special prosecutor Archibald Cox, who was investigating the president’s actions in the wake of the Watergate scandal. The event led to the resignations of several other top law enforcement officials, including then-Attorney General Elliot Richardson and then-Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus.

The difference here is that Nixon’s days were already numbered. Despite at one point leading in the polls in the midst of his own re-election campaign, the paranoid president was convinced he needed to spy on political opponents to gain an edge. Comey, on the other hand, was in the middle of exonerating President Trump over the aging Russian interference narrative.

If Trump really wanted to cover his tracks, why would he oust someone who was indirectly helping him? After all, Democrats love to recall Comey’s announcement on re-opening his investigation into their presidential candidate barely a fortnight before election day.

The fact of the matter is that Democrats wanted Comey fired until Trump actually went ahead and did it. Liberal icons like Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Bernie Sanders openly called for the FBI director to step down for allegedly interfering with the election by making Hillary Clinton look bad – as if she needed the help.

“I think that Comey acted in an outrageous way during the campaign,” Sanders said during an interview with ABC News. “His behavior in terms of what he said in the week or two before the election was unacceptable.”

The self-branded “democratic socialist” went on to add that it would “not be a bad thing for the American people” if the FBI director opted to leave his post.

Harry Reid, the former Senate Minority Leader, went a step further than his colleague by calling for Comey to be investigated in the days leading up to the election.

“I am so disappointed in Comey,” Reid told MSNBC in a phone interview. “He has let the country down for partisan purposes, and that is why I’m calling him the new J. Edgar Hoover – because I believe that.”

For those less familiar with the FBI’s history, J. Edgar Hoover directed the agency during the height of the Red Scare. This is hardly the type of comparison you would expect from Democrats who are suddenly defending Comey for purely political reasons.

Not surprisingly, the leftist hysteria goes well beyond the marble walls of the Capitol building. In his late night broadcast, Stephen Colbert actually appeared to correct his applauding audience after breaking the news to them.

“Huge Donald Trump fans in here tonight,” the comedian said after Comey’s fate was met with boisterous cheers. “That shows no gratitude at all. Did Trump forget the Hillary emails that Comey talked about?”

Colbert’s audience then remembered to “boo” after the host disclosed Comey was fired at the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Trump’s rationale behind Comey’s firing is still developing, but both parties should be happy with the outgoing director’s dismissal. Under his leadership, the FBI was turned into an international laughing stock as it was unable to come to any conclusion regarding Trump’s alleged ties to the Kremlin or the criminal intent behind Hillary Clinton’s private emails. Neither side got what they wanted, and it’s all thanks to Comey’s incompetence.

But none of this matters to the reactionary left. Despite railing against Comey in droves while the FBI investigated Clinton’s actions as Secretary of State, they’re using his firing as an excuse to build up their case for Trump’s impeachment.

Some Democratic lawmakers are calling for an independent prosecutor to investigate the recent events – and Republicans should allow them to do so because it kills two birds with one stone.

First, it can put the nail in the coffin of the Trump-Russia myth. Second, it allows Trump to portray Democratic Senators as being purely obstructionist. These are both wins for the Trump administration and the Republican Party as a whole.
