Liberals Suddenly Love Dirty Socialist Oil Because Trump Hates It

President Trump just did something any sane American should cheer for — he pulled the plug on U.S. imports of filthy Venezuelan crude that props up a socialist narco-regime and spews more pollution than almost any oil on the planet. Naturally, Democrats are furious. To hear them tell it, cutting ties with Nicolás Maduro’s oil racket will “destabilize energy markets” and “punish developing nations.” Translation: Trump’s for it, so they’re against it — even if it means defending the dirtiest oil on Earth and funneling cash to a dictator who’d turn the White House into a Marxist museum if he could.

Trump signed the executive order this morning, citing both national security and economic reasons. “We don’t need oil from dictators who hate our country,” he said. “We have more than enough energy right here at home.” He’s right — America’s oil reserves could keep the country running for decades if we unleashed them. But Democrats aren’t interested in that. They’re interested in keeping Trump from scoring a win, even if it means going to bat for a brutal regime.

The hypocrisy is so thick you could drill through it. Two years ago, during the Biden administration, Democrats were calling Venezuelan crude “dirty oil” and warning about its massive carbon footprint. They weren’t wrong — heavy crude from Venezuela’s Orinoco Belt is some of the most polluting on Earth, producing significantly more greenhouse gas emissions than U.S. shale oil. But once Trump targeted it, Democrats suddenly developed a deep, tender affection for socialist sludge.

This is the same crowd that pretends to be obsessed with climate change. These are the people who will lecture you about paper straws, tell you your gas stove is killing the planet, and insist we need to spend trillions on “green energy” right now. But the second Trump threatens to turn off Maduro’s cash spigot, environmentalism goes out the window. “We must maintain stable global supply chains,” they cry — which is code for “we’d rather buy oil from a socialist dictatorship than drill it ourselves under Trump.”

It gets worse. Not only does Venezuelan oil fund a regime that has starved its own people and jailed political dissidents, it also enriches the same criminal networks smuggling drugs and human beings into the United States. A 2024 DEA report detailed how elements of Maduro’s government are directly involved in moving cocaine through the Caribbean into U.S. ports. Every barrel we buy is another payday for the same people fueling our border crisis.

And here’s the kicker — the U.S. doesn’t need this oil at all. Biden’s decision to ramp up Venezuelan imports after shutting down pipelines and restricting drilling wasn’t about “energy necessity.” It was about optics and politics. Buying from Maduro was a way to claim they were keeping gas prices low without giving credit to American drillers. Trump’s order exposes that for the sham it is.

Predictably, the usual suspects rushed to the cameras today to condemn the move. Senator Chris Murphy warned it would “cause pain for working families.” Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said it would “undermine climate diplomacy” — which is a truly impressive feat of mental gymnastics given that Venezuelan oil is a climate disaster. Not one of them explained why we should keep buying cartel-funded crude when we have cleaner, safer oil under our own soil.

Trump’s point couldn’t be more straightforward: why on earth would we bankroll an enemy regime, wreck our environment more than necessary, and undermine our own workers — all to avoid drilling here at home? The answer is obvious. Because in the mind of the modern Democrat, the worst possible outcome isn’t empowering Maduro or polluting the planet. The worst possible outcome is Donald J. Trump being proven right.

So now we’re treated to the bizarre spectacle of Democrats transforming overnight into lobbyists for a socialist dictator’s oil industry. If Maduro put Trump’s face on every barrel, maybe they’d finally oppose it. Until then, they’ll keep defending the indefensible, proving once again that in the twisted game of “Opposite Day” politics, they’d rather stand with Caracas than with common sense.
