Pfizer’s CEO Albert Bourla has entered full-blown panic mode, following the leak of highly secretive vaccine deals which his company made.
Bourla was slated to testify before the European Parliament’s special committee but decided not to show up after the release of a report which audited the EU’s vaccine procurement strategy and suggested that there may have been some serious foul play involved.
The Pfizer CEO was found to have a direct relationship with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen prior to the signing of a massive multi-billion euro vaccine deal.
The report, by the European Court of Auditors, found that von der Leyen was leading negotiations for the EU’s largest vaccine contract which included up to 1.8 billion doses of the Pfizer vaccine.
Von der Leyen’s involvement in the negotiations was rather peculiar, given that all other contracts were settled on by a negotiating team comprised of multiple officials from the Commission and member countries.
The deal was signed in May 2021, and as it turns out, Bourla and von der Leyen had been secretly texting all throughout the month of April while negotiations were ongoing. Two months later, the texts disappeared, indicating that they were deleted to hide what the two were discussing behind closed doors about the massive deal.
Bourla was scheduled to appear before the panel, alongside key officials involved in the EUs vaccine procurement process, in order to discuss how to respond to future pandemics.
Other pharmaceutical executives have already addressed the committee, including the CEO of Moderna and senior officials from AstraZeneca and Sanofi.
The committee’s chair, Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt, said that she “deeply regrets” the decision taken by Pfizer to run from questioning on the subject.
Bourla and von der Leyen’s seemingly intimate relationship was pointed out last year by the NYT, when Bourla said that the two had “developed a deep trust, because [they] got into deep discussions.”
“She knew details about the variants, she knew details about everything. So that made the discussion, way more engaged.”
The deal would eventually face heavy scrutiny from European governments, who later tried to renegotiate or cut supplies from Pfizer as it became clear that a slump in vaccinations meant that von der Leyen’s pricey deal with Pfizer was for way too many doses.
EU nations actually warned that they were facing a massive overstock of vaccines and their only option would soon be to throw them away.
Pfizer, for its part, refused to allow the countries to cut back on the number of doses they are scheduled to receive, agreeing only to postpone deliveries for a short period of time, ensuring they get the maximum amount of money out of that shady deal von der Leyen helped them score.
