Trump Sends National Guard Into Chaos—Newsom Blasts ‘Invasion,’ But Who’s Really to Blame?

President Donald Trump has sent shockwaves through California’s political establishment after ordering the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops into Los Angeles to contain violent protests sparked by recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

The streets of Los Angeles, already known for being a hub of radical sanctuary policies, descended into chaos this week as progressive organizers, immigrant advocacy groups, and far-left agitators flooded the streets to decry what they called “racist, anti-immigrant operations.” Several demonstrations quickly turned violent, with clashes breaking out between protesters and local law enforcement, leading to injured deputies, damaged property, and over 100 arrests.

In response to the growing disorder, President Trump acted swiftly. Using his authority under Title 10 of the U.S. Code, the president bypassed California Governor Gavin Newsom—who refused to request assistance—and ordered a federal deployment to stabilize the situation.

“Enough is enough,” Trump said in a press conference from the White House on Saturday morning. “When blue-state governors let criminals take over their streets, it’s my job as Commander-in-Chief to protect law-abiding Americans. These are not peaceful protests. These are riots.”

The deployment, which began overnight Friday and continued throughout the weekend, involves military police units, logistical support, and National Guard medical personnel. Federal agents are also working closely with ICE and DHS officers already stationed in Los Angeles.

Governor Newsom, predictably, fired back. He called the move “purposefully inflammatory” and accused the Trump administration of “militarizing” the state without proper consultation. In a press release, Newsom warned that “California will not be bullied by authoritarian tactics.”

But critics say Newsom’s rhetoric is detached from reality. Conservative commentators and Republican lawmakers argue that Newsom’s long-standing sanctuary policies and soft-on-crime governance are exactly what led to this crisis in the first place.

“Newsom has spent years encouraging lawlessness,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). “He turned California into a haven for illegal aliens and Antifa thugs. Now that it’s blowing up in his face, he’s pointing fingers at the only man doing something about it—President Trump.”

Footage from the protests shows masked demonstrators blocking highways, throwing bottles at police, and waving anti-American flags while chanting slogans like “No ICE, No USA!” and “Defund the Feds.” Several businesses in downtown LA have already reported looting and vandalism.

Law enforcement unions in the state have praised the National Guard presence, noting that local police have been stretched thin and, in many cases, politically restricted from taking firm action.

“We’ve had our hands tied by sanctuary city laws and liberal mayors,” said a representative from the Los Angeles Police Protective League. “The Guard brings order, and right now that’s exactly what we need.”

Pentagon sources have indicated that, if the situation continues to spiral, the White House is considering additional deployments. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that active-duty Marines are on standby at Camp Pendleton.

The unrest was triggered after a coordinated series of ICE operations last week resulted in over 500 arrests across Southern California. Many of those arrested were individuals with prior deportation orders, criminal records, or expired visas. Still, progressive groups labeled the actions as “xenophobic” and “fascist,” stoking fears among undocumented communities.

The president’s political opponents are already trying to capitalize on the chaos, framing Trump’s decision as a campaign stunt or authoritarian power grab. But supporters of the president argue it’s yet another example of him stepping up to do the job Democrats refuse to do.

“This is why we elected Trump again,” said Jason Herrera, a former LAPD officer and local organizer with Citizens for Border Security. “He doesn’t back down. He doesn’t cower to Newsom or the media. He protects Americans.”

Polling data underscores the public’s support for Trump’s immigration policies. A recent CBS News/YouGov poll reveals that 54% of U.S. adults support President Trump’s deportation efforts.

Another poll found a significant majority of Americans—83%—support deporting undocumented migrants convicted of violent crimes. This widespread approval suggests that while the removal methods may be contentious, the principle of enforcing immigration laws garners strong bipartisan support.

While California officials continue to fume and activists threaten more demonstrations, National Guard troops remain posted at key sites throughout the city. And with Trump promising to “restore order no matter the cost,” it’s clear the White House has no intention of backing down.
