Did you know there was an agency inside the Department of Justice that’s not accountable to Congress? Its agents never have to testify before Congress or in a court of law. The agents shred their notes and have never left a paper trail on any of their organization’s secretive operations on US soil. Sounds kind of spooky, right? Even the CIA Director has to come to oversight hearings in Congress occasionally. But the Community Relations Service (CRS) never has to do that. This secretive government agency has been operating since 1964. Until now. President Donald Trump just defunded it and shut it down.
Here’s a scenario that will sound familiar to most regular news consumers.
A person gets murdered in a heinous, almost inexplicably violent fashion by a criminal. A few days later, the family holds a press conference. Instead of anyone from the family speaking, a “spokesperson” tells the news cameras that the important thing for the community to focus on right now is healing, and to remember the character of the victim and blah blah blah.
These spokespersons never call for justice for the criminal. You can probably remember many times when this has happened over the past few years. It always seems kind of surreal and fake. If you were a grieving parent in that situation, wouldn’t you want your child’s murderer to be immediately executed outside the courthouse after a 5-minute trial?
The spokesperson in these scenarios is always a CRS agent. Sometimes a family member reads a statement, prepared by the CRS, and then takes no questions.
The CRS was formed in 1964 as a special division inside the Justice Department. It describes itself as a “peacemaker” organization, with a mission to defuse “community conflicts and tensions arising from differences of race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion and disability.”
Since the 1960s, the CRS has been fomenting riots in cities across the country. The goal was to advance the progressive movement, but to keep them under just enough control so that residents wouldn’t react. CRS agents do this through a combination of media manipulation, working with state and local police forces, and possibly through stationing agent provocateurs in the crowds.
In the 1970s, liberal Justice W. Arthur Garrity, Jr., imposed forced busing on the country to racially integrate schools. It was a disastrous failure. Black and white families hated the idea. In South Boston, a white student was stabbed by a black student in 1974. White parents took to the streets to protest the move.
CRS agents showed up immediately. They weren’t there to protect the community or the victim. They were there to downplay the racially motivated attack and to get everyone to go back home and stop protesting. There are multiple instances since the 1980s when the CRS forced local news stations to hire non-white news anchors. The agency threatened to pull the FCC licenses of these stations and take them off the air. The CRS has also promoted transgender “youth visibility” events and helped to build mosques in small towns across the country in red states.
When George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin in a clear act of self-defense in Sanford, Florida, CRS agents trotted the Martin family in front of Congress about the grave racial injustice of the whole thing. The CRS held trainings for activists and managed the protests in Sanford.
Remember when Black Lives Matter materialized out of nowhere and started rioting in Ferguson, Missouri, back in 2014? That was the CRS, under the direction of President Barack “Weaponized Government” Obama. And of course, who could forget the George Floyd Summer of Love and Mostly Peaceful Riots in 2020?
This agency is immune to Freedom of Information Act requests and has never had to testify in front of Congress or in a court of law. And now it never will! President Trump has zeroed out the budget for the Community Relations Service. Every CRS agent has been fired. They appointed one person to staff the office to meet statutory requirements, but other than that, the agency no longer exists.
