In January, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter he was considering “sending in the feds” to deal with the city of Chicago’s catastrophically high crime rate. While months have passed since that statement, an examination of crime-ridden municipality reveals such action may indeed be necessary.
Both as a candidate and now as president, Trump has spoken out against the lawlessness and lack of accountability in Chicago – a haven of liberal politics and the home of Barack Obama. The mainstream liberal press was most incensed over the warning by Mr. Trump that if things do not shape up, he would send in the federal troops.
Trump did not create this mess. He is instead the only one serious about making Chicago safe again. The president is right about the failing of liberal policies in Chicago. Here are some reasons why.
A Deplorable Public School System
Education is the bedrock of our society. The Supreme Court said so in Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954. That decision ended the practice of racial segregation in public schools. Sadly, most people seem to forget that the real objective of the parents who filed the cases was to get their children the best education possible.
Liberals became so focused on integration that they forgot all about improving the educational quality of schools for minorities. And, that is the state we are in today. The schools of inner-city Chicago, mostly full of racial minorities and recent immigrants, are deplorable. Violence, drugs and truancy are rampant.
Liberal teachers’ unions continue to refuse to allow poor students to use vouchers to attend better, more expensive, private academies.
These kids deserve the decent education the parents in Brown actually imagined. Yet, liberals refuse to budge. They want to maintain their monopoly on poor and minority students. They want no competition from private schools.
Trump is right. Chicago cannot stand another year of inadequately educated students graduating from the public schools. If troops need to be placed in the hallways, so be it. Inner-city children need to feel safe if they are to succeed in their education.
Astronomical Homicide Rate
In 2016, Chicago suffered 726 homicides – a 19-year high. This number is appalling, but it gets worse. African Americans are more likely to be the victims, as black males represent 80 percent of all homicide victims in Chicago.
Obviously, something needs to change. This is why Donald Trump has warned the Democratic government of Chicago that unless it gets its house in order he will take matters into his own hands. More than likely, he will federalize the Illinois National Guard.
This proposal got the president vilified as the left wing media went on the attack.
Meanwhile, inner-city residents live in constant fear. Children are afraid to walk home from school or go outside to play. Gangs bully boys and girls, forcing them to join or suffer physical violence.
African American communities in Chicago and around the country are in shambles. Unemployment is at a record high. Young people need to attend school to better their chances at success. But, criminals prey on them, both in school and on the way home, making it impossible to get a decent education.
Illegal immigrant Gang Members Protected by Anonymity
When candidate Trump informed the media that he would build a wall between Mexico and the United states, liberals were outraged. They thought the idea preposterous. Somehow it is wrong to want to protect your borders.
If Americans are curious as to why a stronger border may be necessary, they need not travel south of the border. They can instead simply visit Chicago.
Illegal immigrant gang members pose a central problem in the city. To make matters worse, these men and women have virtual anonymity as a result of their illegal status. This makes the job of police that much harder.
No school record, no birth certificate, no military fingerprints, no Selective Service registration. Nothing. Illegal gang members can do virtually anything they want before getting caught. How do you search for a criminal who legally does not exist?
While it is ultimately up to Chicago’s own government to deal with its problems, with support from the Illinois government, Trump should do everything in his power to hold these officials accountable and implement real change.
