Border Apprehensions Hit Lowest Level Since 1968 — Turns Out You Just Needed a President Who Wanted to Secure It

Ninety-eight thousand, seven hundred and eight. That's the total number of southwest border apprehensions for fiscal year 2026 — the lowest since Border Patrol recorded 96,641 in 1968. For context, under Joe Biden, that number was 1.8 million. Per year.

A 95% decline. Not a dip. Not a trend. A decimation of the border crisis in under two years.

The Department of Homeland Security released the numbers on October 16, and the data is the kind of thing that ends arguments permanently. Nationwide encounters for FY 2026 came in at 379,243 — an 88% drop from Biden's FY 2023 peak, when DHS was processing 2.7 million encounters annually. Biden's single worst month hit 249,740. Trump's entire fiscal year barely cracked a third of that.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin didn't mince the numbers: "President Trump promised the American people a secure border, and the data proves he delivered."

CBP Commissioner Rodney S. Scott put it in operational terms: "FY 2026 demonstrated what focused enforcement, strong partnerships, and the commitment of our frontline personnel can achieve."

Here's the number that should be carved into the wall itself: seventeen consecutive months with zero Border Patrol releases at the southern border. Zero. Not reduced. Not minimized. Zero. FY 2026 is the first fiscal year in United States history where Border Patrol released nobody at the border.

The infrastructure tells the same story. Since January 20, 2025, 250 miles of new border barrier have been completed. The administration obligated $34.3 billion for Smart Wall projects between September 2025 and September 2026. Drug seizures hit nearly one million pounds — 63% higher than the 600,000-pound four-year average. Counterfeit goods seizures topped 55.5 million items valued at $12.6 billion.

Remember the argument? The border "can't be secured." It's too long, too porous, too complicated. The "root causes" need to be addressed first — which conveniently meant sending money to Central American governments while leaving the door propped open. We heard it from every think tank, every Sunday show panelist, every editorial board that treated open borders as a weather pattern instead of a policy choice.

The 98,708 number answers every one of those arguments with a single data point. The border was never unsecurable. It was unsecured on purpose.

Alien deaths at the border declined nearly 80% compared to the Biden administration. The same people who spent four years lecturing us about the "humanitarian" approach to immigration presided over record deaths in the desert, children trafficked by cartels, and a fentanyl crisis that killed Americans in every zip code in the country. Compassion, apparently, was letting 1.8 million people a year make the most dangerous journey in the Western Hemisphere.

The data represents the most dramatic single-term reversal in border enforcement in modern American history. Not gradual. Not incremental. The kind of shift that happens when policy changes overnight because the person signing the orders actually wants the outcome.

Seventeen months. Zero releases. Ninety-eight thousand apprehensions in a year that used to see that many in a slow month.

The border was always a solvable problem. It just needed someone who wanted to solve it.
