A Democrat congressman used the Congressional Baseball Game — the same annual charity event where Rep. Steve Scalise was nearly assassinated by a left-wing gunman in 2017 — to tell reporters he wished he could "run over" President Trump. Rep. Christian Menefee (D-TX-18) apparently thought that was a perfectly fine thing to say while standing on the field still haunted by actual political violence.
Because nothing says "we're the party of unity and decency" like fantasizing about bodily harm to the sitting president at the exact spot where your side already tried to murder Republicans. Classy stuff.
Townhall caught Menefee before the game on June 10, and when asked whether he considered any Republicans to be fascists, the Texas congressman didn't exactly mince words. "A lot of them, yeah. Certainly, the President is," Menefee said. Then came the kicker: "I wish he was out here playing, hopefully run him over when I'm sliding home."
Let that sink in. He's standing at Nationals Park — the same venue where James Hodgkinson opened fire on Republican lawmakers during batting practice in 2017, putting a bullet through Steve Scalise's hip and nearly killing him — and his big contribution to the evening is a fantasy about plowing into the President of the United States.
Menefee also shared his deeper motivation for the charity game. "There's a deep-seated anger that makes us want to win, so we gotta go get this dub," he told Townhall. Deep-seated anger. At a charity baseball game. These people need therapy, not a batting order.
For context, the Congressional Baseball Game has been a bipartisan tradition since 1909. It raises money for charity. It's supposed to be one of those rare moments where both parties pretend to be decent human beings for a few hours. And this guy turned it into a campaign ad for political violence.
Now imagine — just for fun — a Republican congressman saying he wished he could "run over" Barack Obama or Joe Biden at a public event. CNN would run a 72-hour panel. The FBI would open a file. MSNBC hosts would weep on camera. But a Democrat says it about Trump? Crickets.
The irony is almost too perfect. The left has spent years lecturing us about "dangerous rhetoric" and "stochastic terrorism" every time a conservative tells a joke. They blamed Sarah Palin's campaign map for the Gabby Giffords shooting. They said Trump's tweets were going to get people killed. But their own guy stands on the field where a Bernie bro actually shot a congressman and says he wants to run over the president, and we're supposed to shrug?
Rules for thee, never for me. That's the Democrat brand in 2026.
Oh, and one more thing — the Republicans won the game 11-0, including an 8-run fourth inning. So Menefee didn't even get his "dub." He got shut out on the field and exposed himself as a lunatic off it.
Perfect night for the Democrats, really.
