Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps published a 25-page open letter on September 29 addressed "to the honorable people of the United States of America," urging American voters to remove President Trump and his allies from power in the midterm elections five weeks from now.
The IRGC is a designated terrorist organization.
The letter, which reads like a campaign mailer written by a regime whose currency lost more than 13 percent of its value in the last 27 days, declares that "now is the time, as the American political system is at its weakest." IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi held a press conference to promote it, telling reporters that "the American people are not knowledgeable about many developments. We believe if they knew more, they would think differently and take other decisions."
So the people who fund Hezbollah, arm the Houthis, and have been designated a terrorist organization by multiple countries think the problem is that Americans just don't have enough information. Noted.
The letter's language about Trump specifically is worth reading in full. The IRGC describes America's commander-in-chief as "not only an inveterate liar but also an insanely avaricious man" to whom "America's national security and the lives of its service members are entrusted." This from the same organization whose proxies have been targeting American personnel across the Middle East for decades.
Mohebbi also addressed Iran's nuclear program with the kind of line that writes itself: "The enemy knows that Iran is not after nuclear weapons." He used the word "enemy" to describe the United States — in the same letter asking American voters to trust Iran's judgment on who should lead them.
The timing is what makes this land. On the same day the IRGC published its plea to American voters, Iran's rial crashed past 2.5 million to one U.S. dollar — a new all-time record low. Just 27 days earlier, the rial had already set its previous record at 2.2 million to the dollar. The International Monetary Fund projects Iran's average annual inflation will hit 68.9 percent in 2026. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump's pressure campaign is producing results.
He appears to be right. The White House launched "Operation Economic Outcast" earlier in September, sanctioning more than 60 targets and expanding sanctionable sectors to digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz are running at roughly 10 million barrels per day — about half of pre-war volume. Mohebbi tried to spin this as strength, claiming that "the fact that the Americans might manage, at great expense, considerable trouble and high risk to sneak a small vessel through the Strait of Hormuz under cover of darkness to export, say, 100 or 200 barrels of oil does not mean the Strait is open."
That's the IRGC's version of "everything is fine." Their currency says otherwise.
At the United Nations, Trump addressed the situation with his usual restraint, stating he could "annihilate" the Islamic Republic if he chose. The IRGC letter arrived two days later. The regime that calls the United States "the enemy" in official communications is now asking that enemy's voters to do what its military couldn't — stop Trump's maximum pressure campaign at the ballot box.
