Poll: 70% of GOP Voters Support Trump Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum

The majority of GOP voters support the recent tariffs raised on foreign aluminum and steel, according to a recent poll by the Morning Consult.

The poll comes after President Donald Trump’s announcement that a 25% tariff would be imposed on imports of foreign steel and a 10% tax would be placed on imported aluminum. Overall, 41 percent of all Americans support this endeavor.

The poll in question targeted American citizens’ reactions to and opinions of President Trump’s recent tariffs; these are designed to target China and other nations that employ unfair trade practices that harm the United States and our commerce. The poll ran from the 8-12th of March, and focused on voter’s opinions about this innovative approach.

Overall, 41 % of responders thought the approach was sound and agreed with the tariffs, while 35% disagreed. There was a wide expanse between Republicans and Democrat responders, mainly along party lines.

Critics of the tariffs feel that they will ultimately lead to a trade war and cause an increase in prices across the board. There are also fears that this approach could lead to destabilization international trading.

Poll Details

A total of 1,997 people were included in the survey; all were registered voters, a mix of Democrats and Republicans. The majority of the Republican voters support the plan; among the Republican voters who are not fans of President Trump, there was 64% in support of the plan. Trump supporters approved of these new tariffs at an even higher rate; 70 percent of this group supported the new tariffs.

Among Democrats, a slight majority oppose the tariffs – 54% of this group feel that the tariffs are a bad idea. This number does not change when the president’s name is mentioned. For Democrats that support the tariff, though, the Trump connection matters. 25% of Democrats support the new tariffs if no mention of President Trump is made, but that number drops to 22 percent when Trump’s name is attached to the idea.

A New Look at an Old Idea

The idea of raising the tariff on foreign imports of steel and aluminum is not a new idea – for Democrats. For years, Democrats have floated the idea of improving US commerce and trade by imposing tariffs. In many cases, Democrats do not specifically oppose the idea of the tariff – but the possibility that the tariff in question was initiated by Donald Trump.

The tariffs would help voters from both sides of the aisle in states that have many blue-collar voters; both President Trump and many Democratic lawmakers want to be seen as helping these voters, but don’t want to be connected with one another.

In addition to the divide along party lines, the poll found that the states that had steel and aluminum production also supported the initiative in greater numbers – 40% of all voters from these states approved of the measure when President Trumps name was not mentioned. That number plummets to just 32%, according to the polls.

Trade War Fears

Most respondents who opposed the measures feared that the tariffs would lead to some form of trade war that would eventually harm the very workers and industries it was designed to assist.

According to Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.), people in his state feared that a trade war was coming.

“I think many of us have known that there’s a little bit of a protectionist dynamic with this administration,” Paulsen said. “I think, from a Ways and Means perspective — a lot of us really believe in having a strong trade agenda. We’re trying to shape the framework of this as best as possible.”

Key takeaways from this new poll are the divisions along party lines and the differences in opposition rates when President Trump’s name was mentioned alongside the Tariffs. This suggests that more Democrats could support the process – but do not want to align with the president in any way, even if the end result would be beneficial for their own families and towns.

    • I agree. T he only ones that will be hurt are the foreign producers. I do not see how this will harm AMERICAN workers or AMERICA’S GPO. Even IF President Trump appointed QbamASS to a cabinet post the DumboRATS would complain.

  1. In my opinion we didn’t need another “politician” in the White House. We needed President Trump, an intelligent business man, who understands the workings of financial freedom. He’s done more in one year to “make America Great again” than Obama did in 8 years. President Trump cares deeply for the future of the United States. He’s unafraid of making changes and this is driving the leftist liberal elites nuts. I’m a proud deplorable, one who has hope once again, that we shall overcome the damage Obama has put upon us.

  2. The polling difference between 25% or 22% of Dem support depending on whether Trump’s name is mentioned isn’t really that much of a story. The part that’s telling is that 54% of Dems oppose this despite it being a major part of Democrat platforms for at least 3 decades (especially those seeking heavy union votes).

There’s two ways to take this. One, Democrat voters dont actually have opinions on most issues, they just support whatever Dems push and oppose GOP actions. The second is that many of the Democrat voters who supported tariffs between 1980s-2010s are now registered Republicans and the new Democratic party is made up of more Progressive Globalists who think George Soros’ “sans-borders” agenda should be that of the party.

    I suspect it’s a mixture of both.

  3. Btw: The way this can hurt Americans is by the guaranteed backlash actions of countries economically affected by tariffs. They will create their own tariffs on items we buy heavily from them, especially ones we don’t grow or produce in this country. That will raise food & fuel prices greatly.

However, if we exempted our neighbors in North & Central America and left the tariffs focused on Europe & Asia, those effects would be greatly reduced as Canada has plenty of fuel for all of our needs in the US and Mexico & Central America have all the sugar, coffee & produce needed for Americans to consume.

This is one of the reasons why Trump has listened to his advisers and said he will exempt Canada & Mexico. Additionally, all the companies making cars in the US (GM, Ford, Dodge, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes & Audi) informed the president this will greatly harm them & their stock as they buy most of their steel for these cars from Canada & Mexico. They explained that if they’re forced to pay more for it that to avoid passing the cost onto consumers, they’ll have to move their manufacturing to those countries as well, taking hundreds of thousands of good paying America jobs along and negating the US job gains in steel production.

    • The auto companies stating they will move out of the US is a mute threat, They already have moved. The truth is the US used to be #3/4 in steel and when the US slips below India as a steel producer, there is something very wrong going on. China went from #4 to #1 during Clinton years and has been there ever since. aluminum was high in the US in the 1970s. Since 2012, china has more than tripled their export. This is all due to tariffs and energy costs. Mostly it was tariffs against the US that hurt both our steel and aluminum production yet the US is one of the highest consumers. We can make our own and put tariffs on other countries for a change

  4. Like the POTUS says, it is time we ended some of the “bad deals” we have gotten ourselves into over the years. I feel like the President has our best interest at heart. If it causes problems, I think he would be capable of making adjustments. He seems to me to be smarter than any of the democrats, so I’m all in. Let’s give it a try, Mr. President.

  5. Karl, your post makes sense to me. I still believe Mr. Trump will make adjustments if he sees we are cuttting off our nose, to spite our face. Like someone has stated, he has done more in one year, than the previous administration has done the entire 8 yrs. he was in the WH. Try & wrap your head around that, think of what we would have if Hillary was in the WH. Gives me a bad migraine just thinking about it.

  6. The liberal left has a lynch mob ignorance, they would be against anything the devil wishes them to do.
They have the mentality of a Tyranny, a dictatorship. False rhetoric from their tongues about working across the aille .
They are ruthless, and evil, and are bad for this country.

  7. I agree, my point wasn’t that this is wrong, just that it must be done in the right way to benefit a large portion of our economy and avoid (and prepare for) retaliation as much as possible.

Also there are specific nations we want to suffer most from this, particularly those countries that manipulate their markets and currency and specifically try to damage the US. That can be best achieved by keeping some countries friendly and prospering so that it doesn’t end up the rest of the world against us.

As Trump himself said, “It’s America first, not America only”.

    • exactly and it takes a businessman not a politician to do it right. Trump is a citizen first, businessman 2nd, and not a politician. so any dealings made to embellish a party or politicians pockets is now threatened.

  8. this site ” conservative zone” is one of the best sites go,in but it is COMPLETELY blocked from being posted on FB = go ahead and just try to share it = LIBTARD piece of SH!T that FB is

  9. The problem with everything right now is the media. They are so hell bent against Trump they would cut off their noses to spite their face. Our kids and young adults are being so poisoned by the media lying that it’s difficult to explain anything truthful. I have never been so proud of a President in my life. I am proud to say I voted for him. That in itself is something our kids and young adults don’t undrtstand because they dont know how it feels to truly love your country. The complete reason for that is the 44th so called President. He apologized for anything American. He caused race relations to deteriorate so far its worse than in the 60s and 70s. Remember before BO there wasn’t the division. I was born in the 60s and a young adult in the 80s (best decade ever by the way) and i didnt hate people like there is hatred now. I was proud to vote for Ronald Reagen. Democrats were basically like republicans but were the party of free speech,What happened? The illegal election of Barrack hussain Obama. He will go down as the most corrupt “president” that ever lived. The liberals got a pass with bo to act and treat people who don’t believe what they do as trash. Well I have news for him and killery, they set off a fire in the hearts of true Americans to fight back. To get ourAmerica back. Go Trump 2020!!!!

  10. We are now a country of wimps. Any action that America needs to take to protect our country from having it’s economy and future assured is protested by self interest. We are suppose to be a United States that stands together. We all should be willing to accept some economic pain to protect our country. China can destroy us by stealing our technology and destroying our economy and industry. We are spoiled greedy nation willing to destroy our country. Our founders would consider our present day so-called leaders and wimpy citizens a disgrace.

  11. I think that if a Company moves their production outside the US to save money the Government should figure out how much it cost to make that product in the US then how much it cost outside the US then add the difference to that product to bring it up to what it would coat to make in the US. An use that extra money to help those that were hurt by the move.

  12. What I like to understand is why are we supporting foreign workers by 1/2 trillion dollars and this is good for us? how. We still have pay for welfare and unemployment benefits, so that’s even more money out of our pockets. Free trade must be both ways if we are to benefit from it, not just one way.

  13. The reason most of the 30% don’t agree with Trump’s tariff campaign is because they don’t understand negotiation or business or what a Level Playing Field is. They accept what is, instead of having principle and knowing what’s right or wrong. It’s like handling a bully…if you don’t stand up to them they will never back down. The issue with government in the past is they never cared about cost. Why bother…hit the taxpayer. That’s the Democrats credo. Want something…raise taxes. Trump thinks like he’s running his own business unlike other president’s. He will not settle for high cost. China has already backed down. Look at what he initially did with Air Force One when Boeing wanted some ridiculous amount. Nuff said.
