A House Republican issued a “double dog dare” to Democrats on the Judiciary Committee last Thursday, challenging them to stop threatening and finally call a vote on the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA.) is tired of the House Democrats continuing to threaten to impeach President Trump and urged them to either follow through or stop talking about it. McClintock is fed up with Democrats seemingly dancing around the issue of whether to actually pursue impeachment, arguing that they want the “illusion of impeachment without the reality.”
“If the majority wants to exercise the House’s power of impeachment, all you got to do is ask the House to do so,” McClintock said about the continuous threat of impeachment. “All you have to do is ask the House that it direct and authorize this committee to conduct an impeachment inquiry. That’s all you have to do.”
The committee made a step towards their goal of impeachment when they recently voted 24-17 to define the rules for future committee impeachment hearings. Currently, though, the committee is not writing articles of impeachment, nor are they bringing anything to the floor of the House. McClintock continued to egg the Democrats on and even went as far as to dare them to move forward with their impeachment “plan.”
“Resolve that the House authorizes the Judiciary Committee to conduct an inquiry into the impeachment of the president. It’s that simple. I dare you to do it. In fact, I double dog dare you to do it. Have the House vote on those 18 words and then go at it. Why won’t you do that?”
Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said in an effort to clear confusion around the Democrats plan for impeachment, the panel is “engaged in an investigation as to whether to launch an impeachment investigation into President Trump. The resolution before us represents the necessary next step in our investigation of corruption, obstruction, and abuse of power.”
While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA.) has always expressed her skepticism about the impeachment of President Trump, she has caught some flack about her views, and was even heckled by less than happy protesters at a recent dinner in San Francisco. As usual, Pelosi changed her story when pressured, and when asked by Fox News on Monday if she supported Nadler, Pelosi said: “Yes, I do.”
“I think you should characterize it for what it is, it’s a continuation of what we have been doing,” Pelosi said. “You know we all work together on these things.”
Democrat and former Ohio state senator Capri Cafaro said that she is worried that impeachment will not sit well with voters in the middle.
“I think this is bad politics for Democrats,” she said, indicating that so many Americans have a “general fatigue” with impeachment and are completely over the rhetoric.
