For all of the vitriol the western far-left hurls at corporate America — demanding it doesn’t shell out enough taxes, or employ enough (insert oppressed minority of the week) — they more often than not find themselves on the same side.
Think about it — virtually every single of on the multinational companies that dominate modern American life supported everything from same-sex marriage, recognizing the 1,000 new genders, the Affordable Care Act, and the Green New Deal. Who knew that these dirty capitalists could be such committed socialists?
The truth is that corporate America doesn’t really abide by a political ideology, as much as both the right and the left would prefer that it would. Corporate America, like any market entity, follows profit margins — wherever it will take it. And that makes sense — the entire purpose of a corporation’s existence is to make a profit for its shareholders. Without that incentive, there would be no need for it to exist.
This might explain why so many allegedly “American” entities — such as the NBA, video game maker Blizzard, and others often find themselves caving in to pressure from communists. Yes, this sometimes include the feminists that demanded Hasbro start making gender neutral dolls that no child on Earth wants to play with, but it also includes actual, card-carrying communists in the Far East that want to keep their subjects brainwashed.
Chinese communists are doubling down this week in reaction to pro-democracy protester in Hong Kong, which frequently employ American imagery to demonstrate their desire for a more western-style government. Naturally, the protest movement has found many allies in the West — from both conservative and liberal circles. As different as we are from each other, we have far more in common than Hong Kong residents do with their Chinese overlords. This is driving their push for sovereignty and protection from the authoritarian regime in Beijing.
As a freedom-loving culture, we should be supporter Hong Kong in whatever way we can. China is an existential geo-political threat, and people who desire to live in a western-style democracy deserve to have one. This is the purpose of the American experiment.
But, we aren’t leftists — the solution isn’t nationalizing our private industries so they’ll do what we want. There is an easier solution to this problem, and it starts with letting Corporate America know how badly it’s messing up.
