Anti-Trump Candidates are Dropping Like Flies from the 2020 Presidential Race

Over two-dozen candidates put their names in the hat for a chance at the Republican or Democratic nomination for president in the 2020 election cycle. This makes it tough to stand out from the crowd, but only one from each party will prevail for the chance to be our 46th president.

These are the presidential candidates who have already dropped out of the race and ended their hopes of being our next commander in chief.

Let’s start with the opposition party.

Democrats

Sen. Michael Bennet, (D-CO) –Bennet, who ran as a moderate, maintained his candidacy through New Hampshire, but then dropped out of the race on February 11.

Sen. Cory Booker, (D-NJ) –The high-profile senator from New Jersey left the race on January 13, before the Iowa caucuses, due to lack of attention from voters.

Gov. Steve Bullock, (D-MT) – Bullock tried to run on his idea that a Democratic governor of a red state had the best chance to beat Trump, but voters didn’t agree. He ended his campaign on December 2.

Julian Castro, Former HUD Secretary –Due to lack of campaign funds Castro, the only Latino in the race, dropped out of the race on January 2.

Bill de Blasio, NYC Mayor – De Blasio’s efforts barely made it through the summer due to his lack of approval ratings in NY and essentially everywhere else. His campaign ended on September 20.

John Delaney, Former Maryland Congressman – Delaney was the first Democratic candidate to announce his run way back in 2017. He left his House seat to hit the campaign trail, but dropped out on January 31.

Sen Kirsten Gillibrand, (D-NY) – Though she made headlines for criticizing Hillary Clinton, Gillibrand only lasted through the summer, as she dropped out on August 28.

Sen. Kamala Harris, (D-CA) – Harris came out strong, but her poll numbers dropped as her campaign was infested with internal dissension. She left the race on December 3.

John Hickenlooper, Former Colorado Governor – Hickenlooper left the race on August 15, then launched a campaign to unseat Sen. Cory Gardner, (R-CO).

Gov. Jay Inslee, (D-WA) – This hardly-known west coast governor suspended his campaign on August 21.

Mayor Wayne Messam, (D-FL) – Messam did not have the success he hoped for and ended the race on November 20.

Rep. Seth Moulton, (D-MA) – Moulton decided to focus on his reelection to the House of Representatives instead, so he dropped out on August 23.

Beto O’Rourke, Former Texas representative – O’Rourke failed to have the success he had when he ran against Sen. Ted Cruz, (R-TX) in 2018. He conceded on November 1.

Deval Patrick, Former Massachusetts Governor – Patrick entered late and could not seem to gain traction. He quit on February 12.

Rep. Tim Ryan, (D-OH) – The congressman ended his campaign for presidency on October 24 to focus on his reelection.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, (D-CA) –Swalwell was the first candidate to leave the race on either side, and did so on July 8.

Marianne Williamson, Author – The self-help author led her campaign by preaching about love until January 10 when she left the presidential race.

Andrew Yang, Tech Entrepreneur – Although he had much success on social media, he could not get the votes needed so he dropped out on February 11.

Republicans

Mark Sanford, Former South Carolina Governor – Sanford attempted to gain the support of Trump’s loyal fans, but was unsuccessful and left on November 12.

Joe Walsh, Former Illinois Representative – The current radio host said he would rather support a socialist than President Trump, so he quit on February 7.

The remaining Democratic presidential candidates are scheduled to be at the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, February 22.
