Ben Carson: Trans Rights Are NOT Above Those of Abused Women in Shelters

The divide between women’s rights and trans rights continues to grow — this week, HUD Secretary Ben Carson was slammed across social media and regular news outlets for suggesting that the rights of abused women in shelters might come before transgender issues.

Last week, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Ben Carson stated that the rights of transgender individuals do not matter more than the rights of abused women in shelters. The statement came during a hearing on federally funded homeless shelters and the admittance of biological men into what should be a safe space for abused women and children.

The House Appropriations Committee hearing was about federally funded shelters. HUD has proposed allowing shelters to provide single sex bathing areas, restrooms and sleeping areas. These would be based on biology, not preferred gender identity.

Representative Mike Quigley of Illinois claimed that this rule was discriminatory against transgender people. Carson’s response, that the shelter should be a safe haven for abused women first, sparked outrage.

“When you have a single-sex shelter, and it’s there specifically for women who are abused, and then people come in who do not appear to be women and say they’re women, and you have to accept them, does that impinge upon the rights of those women? We have a lot of documentation from those women that says it does impinge upon their rights,” Carson responded.

The women themselves have spoken out about the need for a safe space, particularly when they are in such a perilous situation.

“You’re the only person I have ever heard bring up that issue,” Quigley replied to Carson. “So, you’re saying that because some people think it’s okay to discriminate, that you have to go along with that too.”

Carson’s reply was shared on social media, along with his original statement:

“No, what I’m saying is we have to take everybody’s feelings into consideration. You can’t just select a group and say that their feelings trump everyone else’s groups.”

LBGT activists immediately began vilifying Carson on social media, stating that he plans to discriminate against transgender individuals.

Tweets stating that Carson wanted to deny shelter access to trans individuals and that he was “rightfully grilled” by Quigley flooded the social media site. The backlash wasn’t restricted to social media – the Washington Post and other outlets decried the new policy as well.

According to the Washington Post, the new policy would “weaken Obama-era protections for homeless transgender people, allowing federally funded shelters to deny people admission on religious grounds or force transgender women [biological men] to share bathrooms and sleeping quarters with men.”

This is not the first time that trans groups have complained about Carson’s protections for homeless and abused women in shelters. As the HUD moved to protect these already at risk, transgender rights groups protested the exclusion of biological men from these safe havens.

  1. LOCKS ON INSIDE OF ALL REST ROOMS.
MASTER KEY AVAILBLE TO POLICE ONLY.
LIMIT ONE ADULT AT A TIME.
    KIDS WITH A PARENT O.K.
    TIME LIMIT on use.
    NEW SMALL REST ROOMS ONLY

  2. A biological man who is transgender,is still a biological man and should NOT be in a women’s safe shelter, for obvious reasons.

  3. Carson, is right. A women shelter is for women and children for their safety. There has been already problems concerning this issue. One place, I’m unable to recall where. But, a trangender man went in to a shelter and while there. He raped a women. To me, these so called “women” use it to feed their sick minds. Also, if they commit a crime, would they go to a mans prison or women’s? Where they can have a reason to continue to be a man under a mask of deception. Think about why a man or woman want to change their appearance. The devil is at work here.

  4. Transgenders are mentally ill, and am sick and tired of them thinking they have the right to force themselves, and their rights down biological women’s throats. WOMEN have the right of privacy from biological males, no matter what they “FEEL”. They are trying to take over women’s sports, which is highly unfair, and make women accept them in our most private areas, locker rooms and bath rooms. This has gone too far, and it needs to be STOPPED!

  5. GET RID OF THESE PSYCHOLOGICAL MISFITS. THERE IS ONLY MALE AND FEMALE. YOU CAN’T CHANGE IT. IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE YAU HAVE A MAJOR BRAIN MALFUNCTION THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. YOU WILL NOT CHANGE MOTHER NATURE PERIOD. SEND THEM ALL TO A PLANET FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL BRAIN MALFUNCTIONING MISFITS. AND KEEP THEM THERE.

  6. When the Washington Post and or the New York Times takes action against you, you know you’re right. Thank you Ben Carson, keep up the good work.

  7. There they (the slaves of Satan) go again. Using the “discrimination” hammer to try to bludgeon people into subjection..
Get this straight – Discrimination is NOT a constitutional principle – nowhere mentioned in that document.
The relevant principle is Liberty. The founders first declared it an unalienable (Creator-endowed, not government-given) right; hence government has NO authority to deny it. But that is precisely what “non-discrimination” laws do. To prohibit mere “individual” discrimination is to deny one’s (persons and entities such as a business) Creator-endowed right to make their own decision without government coercion. It is “government” discrimination.
Liberty is our constitutional right as individuals TO discriminate. Therefore,
ask not “Is this person/group being discriminated against?”
Ask rather “Is this person/group being denied their constitutional Liberty?”
Next time, Dr. Ben, hurl this fact back at the “non-discriminators”.

  8. I find it insane that we even need to have this conversation. Most, if not all, of these people need to be treated for mental illness issues. And I mean the politicians.

  9. I am glad that Ben Carson has the courage to stand up against an injustice aimed toward biological females.

  10. People have lost their minds. If you have male or female body parts that you were born with, that is what you are. You can dress however you choose but must use the bathroom of the gender you were born. It’s that simple.
I don’t want men in my bathroom and shouldn’t have to worry about my granddaughters using a restroom that a man may be lurking in.
Proud of Dr Carson standing up for common sense

  11. It the transgender people want to be transgender, then I suggest that there be three bathrooms available and prohibit transgenders from entering into bathrooms intended for gender conscious people! Transgender rights should by no means be above gender conscious people’s rights! This issue is a no brain er and should not even be an issue! Those transgenders have never been around until the recent past because people think they have the right to choose their sex, I sorry they are not Gods and that choice of their gender is God’s decision is God’s and God’s alone! Come judgement day and it’s coming, their eyes will be opened! I don’t care who wants to be transgender, just don’t shove it down my throat, that violates my rights.
