California Has More to Do with the Supply Chain Crisis Than Most Realize

Many Americans rightly blame President Joe Biden’s stunning lack of leadership for the current supply chain crisis. However, few realize that California’s progressive policies actually bear the brunt of the blame.

Two laws, one designed to “protect the environment” and the other created to cater to unions in return for their financial support are directly responsible. They could easily be wiped from the books if progressive politicians actually cared about controlling inflation and ending shortages.

The first law in question dictates emissions standards for large vehicles such as the trucks that routinely transport items from ports to stores. About 50 percent of the nation’s trucks do not meet California’s overly high standards. Because of this, truckers from other states cannot help to alleviate the supply chain blockage.

Indeed, reports show that containers being unloaded from ships are often left sitting in the shipyard because they cannot be transported to their final destination due to a shortage of truckers. Some companies have tried to streamline theprocess by having approved truckers bring items to California’s state line. The freight is then loaded onto other trucks en route to California. However, this is a time-consuming process that only adds to the current backlog at California’s ports.

The other law causing supply chain chaos is California’s infamous AB5 bill that makes it impossible for companies to hire gig workers. Owner-operators (self-employed individuals who run their own small business) can’t work at the ports. What’s more, union rules governing the employees who do work at the ports aren’t designed for the successful handling of a supply chain crisis.

This is not to say that President Biden is free from blame. In fact, he could use his emergency powers as the nation’s chief executive to temporarily suspend both of these disastrous California edicts. Of course, that’s not going to happen. While the president won’t publicly identify himself as a progressive, he is a slave to their will. Biden’s PRO Act, which is thankfully stalled in the Senate, is a union wish-list that makes it impossible for companies to hire temporary workers — while also taking freelancers out of the picture.

If the president gets his way, the chaos seen at California’s ports would be played out throughout the nation. Sadly, Democrats who professed to be the “adults in the room” not only have no clue how to solve the problems they created.

  1. The Teamster “union is not designed to handle a supply chain crisis”. So likely won’t cooperate with change to 24/7 and breaks. But they are leaving the containers on residential streets, even blocking homes and driveways. One video shows one container backed over a car, totaling it, plus over a sidewalk, yard, fence. Perhaps the unions are not designed for backing up. With this crisis in CA, it appears they are looking at no options to modify their plan to GET THE JOB DONE. The pictures of the stacked containers, waiting weeks, is startling.

    Some container shippers are leaving the weeks/months long CA waiting line and sailing thru Panama Canal to the FLORIDA, GEORGIA, SOUTH CAROLJNA ports, all FUNCTIONAL and always open 24/7 and are NOT suffering backlogs, with easy access to SE, NE, Midwest destinations with shorter truck delivery distances/fuel costs. They also allow non union, privately owned and small business trucking firms, all moving the goods speedily. Several ports in Florida, Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC are keeping supply chain in much better shape. Charleston even deepened their port waters last yr, allowing massive ships access, too.

  2. Get the simple minded, greedy tyrant out of his gubernatorial seat and watch the difference!! Oh yea….. Californians had their chance and blew it!!
    Actually, one has to wonder about the validity of that special election, Gruesome Newsom supposedly took it 2 votes to one. I for one, believe that like I believe Brandon got 81 million votes last November.
    Newsom is the biggest joke as a governor in the history of the state of CA. Too bad he still rules
