California Welcomes Communists to Work in Government

Think the state of California couldn’t possibly drift any further to the far left? Think again.

On May 8th, the California State Assembly passed a bill that will allow members of the Communist Party to work openly within the state’s government. Given our nation’s never-ending fight against the backward and dangerous ideology of communism, allowing open communists to openly work within the government seems like a new low even for Californian legislators.

Nevertheless, the California State Assembly thought it was a good idea, for reasons certainly known only to them.

During the 1940s and 1950s at the height of the “Red Scare”, laws across the nation were passed that allowed for people working within the government to be fired if it was found out that they were a practicing communist. For the most part, lawmakers have considered these laws a good idea, even once the Red Scare died down. After all, communism has a tendency to spread through a nation like a virus, and there’s no sense in taking any risk of letting it take root in the United States government.

Except that California apparently thought that it was a risk worth taking. Not only does Bill AB 22 make it no longer acceptable to fire a government employee who is a practicing communist, it also deletes a section of state code that speaks out against communism.

In many ways, this deletion of the state’s official stance on communism is even more troubling than the fact that the state can no longer fire government employees for being communists. The deleted code clearly outlines the danger that communism presents and explains why the state of California finds it necessary to prevent practicing communists from working in the government.

Section E of the code states the following:

“One of the objectives of the world communism movement is to place its members in state and local government positions and in state supported educational institutions. If this objective is successful, propaganda can be disseminated by the members of these organizations among pupils and students by those members who would have the opportunity to teach them and to whom, as teachers, they would look for guidance, authority, and leadership. The members of such groups would use their positions to advocate and teach their doctrines and teach the prescribed Communist Party line group dogma or doctrine without regard to truth or free inquiry. This type of propaganda is sufficiently subtle to escape detection.”

What reason would the California State Assembly possibly have for wanting to get rid of state codes such as this? Sure, liberals could paint their decision as one supporting free speech and tolerance, but even these values have boundaries with respect to national security.

We would never allow members of ISIS to work within our government, and allowing members of the Communist Party to do the same isn’t all that much better.

Of course, none of this should come as a surprise. Recent years have seen liberal ideologies slowly but steadily begin to reflect more socialist sympathies. After all, the 2016 presidential election saw a self-proclaimed democratic socialist very nearly win the Democratic Party’s nomination.

The most dangerous thing is that socialism and communism may not seem like such dangerous ideas unless you know your history. Every now and again, a group of people seems to forget all of the damage and destruction they have caused, and these failed ideologies are tried yet again.

A generation comes along who doesn’t remember the differences between socialist East Germany and capitalist West Germany, or doesn’t recognize the modern day differences between communist North Korea and capitalist South Korea, and the popularity of socialism and communism rise once again. The real-world devastation of these ideologies is striking, yet is somehow so often overlooked.

One can only hope that the United States is not the next country to fall victim to these failed experiments, yet the current signs certainly are not promising. California allowing communists to work within the state government and deleting any state codes that speak out against communism is just another example of liberal politicians slowly warming to what is arguably the most dangerous political ideology to ever exist.
