GWU Students Sign Fake Petition to Remove “Oppressive” White Man from Crosswalk Signals

From statues of the Founding Fathers that are culturally insensitive and downright threatening to special, segregated graduation ceremonies and dorms for black, transgender, LGBT and other groups, colleges are home to a wide range of over the top politically correct culture.

Campus Reform wanted to see just how far the commitment to political correctness would go on the typical college campus. Would students accept and agree to outrageous suggestions, all in the name of inclusion and understanding?

Political Correctness Goes Far Beyond Mascots

George Washington University recently made headlines again for their commitment – or overcommitment to political correctness. Most recently, students demanded the removal of the school’s sports mascot, deeming George the Colonial “extremely offensive.”

After that, Campus Reform wanted to know if they could push the envelope even further.

Campus Reform created a fake petition; in the introduction and details section that describes what students would be supporting, it lists that the “walk” and “don’t walk” symbols on street crossing indicator signs are inherently racist and anti-LGBT. The images, the petition claimed, are problematic because the symbol is of a white man – and that little man is telling students what to do when he signals that it is safe to cross the road.

The petition explains that the use of this white man could be offensive and oppressive to many students on campus, including those of color, transgender students, and other LGBT groups. The effected students could end up feeling oppressed and frightened, and left unable to feel safe when they attended class or head home after school.

The faux petition called for the removal of the little white man, and for the school to change its policies regarding signs. Signs on campus need to be more diverse and inclusive and the petition demanded a change.

Suggested options to replace the white man included little pink and white striped woman, rainbow striped men, and people of color.

Faux Petition Results — Students Want Change

A Campus Reform reporter (and also a college student) strolled the GWU campus, stopping students and explaining the petition. He then asked students to sign to support the removal of the offensive signs. The group detailed the interactions with video, and students were fully aware of what they were signing.

Many students were delighted to sign – and even a faculty member joined in. In addition to signing, many students spoke out in support of the petition, explaining they understood why the white street sign icon could be troubling. Of all the students polled, just one refused to sign the petition and stated it was an unneeded change — everyone else enthusiastically embraced the idea.

Campus Reform shared the videos to showcase just how far political correctness goes on campus; all reporters are also college students. The recent recordings reveal how willing students are to embrace any chance to be “woke” and politically correct.
