Democrats have taken their battle against free speech to the next level with the House Intelligence Committee holding a hearing titled “Misinformation, Conspiracy Theories, and ‘Infodemics’: Stopping the Spread Online”.
Republican representatives were naturally absent from the event, in which witnesses told horrific stories about how social media would “dismantle democracy.” Democrat lawmakers came up with outrageous ideas for limiting basic First Amendment rights in the name of “helping” Americans “occupy the same shared reality again.”
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi should win an award for the most outlandish idea of all. The Democrat representative asked one of the “expert” witnesses if it would be possible to “infect QAnon sites with ideas that would sow discord and pitch website viewers against each other. Thankfully, the witness being questioned shot down the idea, noting that such activity would generate even more interest in QAnon websites.
This doesn’t mean the witness in question held a high view of free speech in general. Dr. Joan Donovan, the research director at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, later complained that social media sites aren’t taking responsibility for ensuring the content on their sites is accurate, which means that “mainstream media reporters” have to “clean up the mess by debunking social media stories and theories.”
The assertion is a bizarre one considering the fact that an important part of a journalist’s job is to cover stories and either confirm their accuracy or call out the fallacies. Contrary to leftist logic, news reporters aren’t supposed to “sustain journalism” (whatever that means) but rather cover actual news.
Dr. Donovan and Nina Jankowicz, a “disinformation fellow” at Wilson Center, went on to call for the government to create a new agency that would supervise social media content and prevent the spread of “harmful information.” Dr. Donovan went one step further to fantasize about “uninventing social media” to “chart a course for the web we want”. By “We”, one can assume this means that progressive activists would get to recreate the web to their liking.
Not to be outdone, Jankowicz then called for more “social media oversight” to specifically target the formation of “potentially violent groups”. Naturally, no details were given on what would constitute a “potentially violent group”. A BLM leader recently called for all white people to be wiped out, but it’s hard to see any social media giant daring to deplatform BLM.
We can’t decide which is worse: the witnesses’ crazy ideas for limiting free speech, or the fact that just about every single Democrat at the hearing had no problem listening to and agreeing with the advice given. If these left-leaning academics had their way, “social media outlets” would be nothing more than progressive platforms for a select number of people — perhaps that’s been the plan all along.
They’re not even pretending anymore, are they!? Be very afraid people!!!!
Continue to fight these ideas at all levels – all people should be able to express their ideas, thought, and opinions. They don’t want to protect the public from false or harmful ideas – they want to supervise the content to reflect their views. Dangerous, indeed.

It’s hard to believe that this is happening in America! I used to think that members of Congress were among the most patriotic people in the country. Looking back, I see that these ideologies began decades ago.? I retired from teaching in 1996, and 3 years before that, we were told at a staff meeting to no longer have our classes say the Pledge of Allegiance! I continued it in my class until the day I retired.
Also, the first year I taught (1964), I was ‘guided’ into joining the State, local and National teachers’ associations. Never giving it much thought, I joined them. A Pep Rally was held and as it happened, it was a Presidential election year. The Democratic candidate hadn’t been nominated yet, but we were told to vote for whom ever it would be. That was the last time I joined the associations! I can’t begin to tell you how much harassment I suffered every Fall because I was usually the only holdout in the school. It’s a big deal to have 100% membership in each school. The NEA, AFT, and NCAE used to vehemently deny being unions. They’re unions, not that it’s a bad thing, but their denial raised questions in my mind.
Frankly, I was dismayed by the leftist bent happening in the career that I devoted 32 years of my life, loving every day of it.
I fondly remember when journalists told us what had happened(news). Now they tell us what to think.
When I joined the U.S. Navy in 1969, I swore an Oath of Allegiance to “protect and defend the Constitution of the U.S.A. against all enemies both foreign and domestic.” The President and all who hold federal government positions. i.e. Senators and Congressmen, swear to that same oath. Those who violate that oath should be either tried for Treason or at THE VERY LEAST be removed from office. Those who would take away your freedom are counting on you ignoring them, thinking they are no real threat. Left wing Socialist Democrats want to take away our freedom and destroy our government. I’m talking about Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Adam Schiff and all those who think like them. Vote them out of office on Nov. 3.
