Born in Brazil, model and television personality Rodrigo Alves is known as the ‘human Ken doll.” The 34-year-old has spent more than a million dollars on plastic surgeries. He has explained in various interviews that he believes that he was born in the wrong body.
Alves, who used to be a flight attendant, had his first surgery — a nose job — when he was just 19-years-old. His love for cosmetic surgery just blew up from there. Since then, he has had more than 103 procedures and 59 plastic surgeries all to look like a human Ken doll — hence the nickname.
The Brazilian model has had several nose jobs, a hair implant, multiple liposuctions, cheek implants, a brow lift and eye lifts. He has also had fillers injected into various body parts—his triceps, biceps, abs and shoulders.
Despite all this work, the ‘Human Ken Doll’ is not even close to being finished with plastic surgeries. Now, he plans to have six of his ribs removed so that he will have a smaller waist. Alves is scheduled to have a consultation to remove three bones from each side.
Alves also recently said in news interviews that he plans to live as a woman. The model recently had a $25,000 hair transplant to help him achieve his new goal of looking more like a human Barbie Doll. The operation is intended to make him look younger and more feminine. Alves says that once his hair grows in, he will be more delicate looking. The procedure itself took eight hours to complete and was extremely painful according to the model.
Even though Alves has had numerous complications as a result of his surgeries, he plans to continue in his quest for perfection. The model defied his doctor’s orders to have a tenth nose job. He was told that he was at risk of losing his nose if he underwent another nose surgery. A London doctor noticed that Alves had a hole above the left of his nose. The hole was the result of necrosis, which is the death of the tissue that results from injury or exposure to chemicals.
Necrosis cannot be reversed. Alves was told that the necrosis could spread and result in him losing his nose, or even eating into other areas of his face. In spite of his doctor’s warning not to have any more nose jobs, Alves went to Dubai and had the surgery done.
So, what makes ‘The Human Ken Doll’ continue to have surgeries in spite of the risks? Alves insists that he doesn’t have an addiction to surgery. However, Fox News reports that the model has been diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder. This disorder is a chronic mental illness that characterized by an obsession with body image and physical appearance. People with this disorder may spend hours each day thinking about their flaws, real or imagined. They can’t control their thoughts. These negative thoughts about their appearance cause emotional distress and interfere with their daily lives.
People with this condition often have multiple plastic surgeries to fix perceived flaws. The attempts to fix one’s appearance with plastic surgery is a symptom of the disorder, which is why surgery will not fix the problem. The person is never satisfied with the results no matter how much they change their appearance.
According to The Sun, Alves has admitted in interviews that he has hated his appearance since a young child. He said that “growing up in Brazil, I hated the way I looked.” He was always quick to find flaws in himself that no one else noticed. Alves began his transformation with a nose job. However, he wasn’t happy with his new nose, so he went back again. He has had ten nose jobs, and still isn’t satisfied with this part of his body. It is quite likely that even after changing his appearance to be more feminine, Alves will never be happy.
According to The Anxiety and Depression Association of America, people with body dysmorphic disorder often suffer other mental disorders like depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The treatment for this disorder is mental health treatment by a trained professional with experience in treating body dysmorphic disorder.
However, rather than advocating for treatment of body dysmorphic disorder, Hollywood normalizes and even promotes Alves’ behavior. He is scheduled to appear on the reality TV show ‘Plastics of Hollywood.’ This show follows the lives of people that have spent millions of dollars total in plastic surgeries.
