Two popular Canadian podcasters were forced to cancel their planned free speech event in New Zealand after leftist agitators pressured the venue to comply with their demands.
Podcasters Stefan Molyenux and Lauren Southern had just wrapped up an event in Australia, where the two spoke about the challenges of multiculturalism and the west’s flailing identity crisis as a whole. While there, they were confronted by a mob of protesters who contended their message was inherently racist. Despite the pushback, however, Southern and Molyneux were able to complete the event as planned. They did not receive the same treatment in New Zealand.
In a YouTube upload released shortly after they learned the planned venue had pulled out of the agreement to host them, Molyneux and Southern recalled the events that led up to the cancellation. Apparently, the venue owner was completely onboard with the event just a day before. The following day, he threatened to have the two arrested if they arrived at the location.
This development is among the latest in a long string of leftist resistance to free speech events. In the United States, popular speakers with much larger audiences including Milo Yiannopoulos, Ann Coulter, and Ben Shapiro have been forced to cancel similar speaking events. Universities typically known to host such events often cite security concerns, rather than actually taking responsibility and ensuring the safety for everyone involved. Shapiro, considered by many to be the least controversial of conservative podcasters, was once forced to fork up $500,000 in security fees to speak at Berkeley.
Stefan Molyneux, who hosts a podcast called Freedomain Radio, has been a controversial figure in the so-called “intellectual dark web” — a term used by many to refer to the budding right-wing commentary community on social media websites. He has been a sharp critic of multiculturalism, feminism, and identity politics.
Lauren Southern rose to prominence as an on-screen personality for right-wing Canadian broadcaster Rebel Media. She famously confronted radical feminists head on during the “Slut Walk,” where she was berated and shamed for stating the obvious fact that there is no “rape culture” in the west — at least in the same vein as in underdeveloped theocracies in the Middle East. More recently, she has independently produced a film called Farmlands, which takes a critical look at the treatment of white farmers in South Africa.
While Molyneux and Southern were unable to take the stage in New Zealand, they did manage to capture plenty of material for their YouTube pages.
