New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has abruptly resigned after several women accused him of abusive sexual encounters that involved hitting, slapping, shaking and other forms of verbal and physical violence.
His fall from grace is particularly notable due to the fact that he was, for a time, considered a leading supporter of the #MeToo movement, congratulating women who stepped forward to accuse men of various forms of sexual abuse.
Four women have come forward to accuse the former New York State Attorney General of various forms of abuse. Two women have decided to remain anonymous while the other two provided their full names to The New Yorker for publication. The two women who have identified themselves as victims of Mr. Schneiderman’s abuse are both Democrats, making it impossible for him to claim that the allegations constituted a political witch-hunt. In fact, hours after the story broke, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo immediately called on Eric Schneiderman to resign his position.
Mr. Schneiderman initially resisted calls for his resignation; eventually he gave in to demands that he step down from his position, but has remained defiant. In his resignation speech, he claimed that the allegations that he beat and threatened several women have nothing to do with his professional conduct or his official work as Attorney General of the state. While he admitted to engaging in role-play, he adamantly denies that this involved violence or non-consensual sex.
His accusers, on the other hand, paint a scary picture of what Mr. Schneiderman is actually like. One notes that he would get drunk most nights when he came home from work. What is more, he would then force others to drink, steal prescription medication and engage in violent behavior that would involve choking, spitting, slapping and name-calling.
He allegedly used his position to threaten his victims, stating that he could have them followed, order their phones to be tapped and even have them killed should they reveal the nature of their abusive relationship with him. Naturally, the fact that Mr. Schneiderman’s position made it possible for him to follow through on these threats terrified his victims, causing them to remain silent for months even after the #MeToo movement gained steam. However, things came to a head when Mr. Schneiderman used his position to take on a leading role in the #MeToo movement. The hypocrisy of a man who gave speeches against sexual violence while beating and threatening them in bed was too much for these women to take, and they decided to take the risk and go public with their stories.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has already announced that it is opening a criminal investigation into Mr. Schneiderman’s behavior. If the allegations are substantiated, Mr. Schneiderman could be charged with a number of crimes. In the event that Mr. Schneiderman manages to evade criminal charges, there is always a chance that at least one of his accusers would take him to court to seek damages. In any case, it is clear that Mr. Schneiderman’s career is over. The disgrace he brought on himself simply cannot be repaired either now or in the future.
Mr. Schneiderman’s fall from grace is unlikely to affect at least his high-profile case against Harvey Weinstein, as the former Attorney General had already named a deputy to invest age the case. However, it is unclear how far Mr. Schneiderman got in investigating former Trump associate Paul Manafort for allegations related to state money laundering. The specifics regarding the state case against Mr. Manafort have not been made clear; however, it is entirely possible that both men could use Mr. Schneiderman’s involvement in the investigation against the prosecution should these cases every wind up in court.
The abrupt downfall of Mr. Schneiderman is almost impossible not to notice, even though a number of Democratic politicians are making a point to talk about it as little as possible. The man who has filed literally dozens of cases against President Trump has been exposed as not only a liar, but also an abusive misogynist and sadist. His downfall will not be forgotten by those who remember his audacious virtue signaling even as he violently abused the women in his life.
