The Russian meddling investigation continues to be a witch hunt in search of a crime and the Paul Manafort trial features a despicable thief, embezzler and adulterer as Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s star witness. The only thing absent from the partisan politically farce . . . a Russian.
Manafort worked as a conservative political consultant on campaigns and causes in the United States and abroad. He stands charged in the Russia Probe for crimes of tax evasion and money laundering that occurred many years before his five months on the Trump Campaign. Special Counsel Mueller has loosely tied Manafort to the investigations because he worked for a Ukrainian organization that was pro-Russia. He didn’t actually take money from Russians, but he may not have reported it correctly.
The entire sideshow reminds of that old party game, “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” The one where someone names a movie and you link actors and actresses back to a Kevin Bacon film. Mueller may consider naming the Manafort trial, “Six Degrees of Russian Meddling.” After spending upwards of $20 million in taxpayer money, he still doesn’t have a Russian or meddler. As the trial judge aptly noted in open court, Robert Mueller is not really after Russians or meddlers.
“You don’t really care about Mr. Manafort,” Judge T.S. Ellis reportedly said during the preliminary hearing. “You really care about what information Mr. Manafort can give you to lead you to Mr. Trump and an impeachment, or whatever.”
Those words have echoed across the American psyche. Many in the legal community recognize that Manafort is not being prosecuted for crimes, he’s being persecuted because he won’t throw dirt on the President of the United States. Mueller, on the other hand, appears willing to parade out a notorious thief and liar to get Pres. Trump — Rick Gates.
The Sorry Story Of Rick Gates
To say that Mueller lacks a witness with cleans hands would be something of an understatement. Gates, a former business associate of Manafort, looks worse on the witness stand than a mafia enforcer testifying against a crime family.
Gates has already admitted that he knowingly and admittedly committed crimes. He’s taking a deal from Mueller to implicate Manafort. The former Trump Campaign advisor would get a deal too, if he’d just implicate the president in some far-fetched Russia scheme.
The Russia probe’s star witness has already confessed, under oath, that he hid money from the U.S. government while managing Manafort’s business interests. He also got caught red-handed by investigators for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort. Despite these facts, Gates had the audacity to claim he is now an honest man telling the truth.
“Yes, I made a decision. I’m here to tell the truth,” Gates said under oath. “Mr. Manafort had the same path. I’m here.”
Gates’ implication was that Manafort could have taken a deal for immunity or a reduced sentence for embarrassing Pres. Trump. Trying to gain a more favorable outcome from Mueller, Gates tried to throw shade on Manafort. He said his former employer “was good at knowing where the money was and how to spend it.” Judge Ellis begged to differ.
“He wasn’t that great at it,” Judge Ellis said, noting that Gates was able to steal money from Manafort without his knowledge. Americans also know the following about Gates’ web of deception.
Gates admitted to conducting a salacious extra-marital affair behind his spouse’s back. Gates lied to government investigators and plead guilty to the charge. Gates submitted fake reports to his former boss to pay for erroneous expenses.
At the end of the day, Mueller is asking a jury and the American people to believe this nefarious character is telling the truth that Manafort instructed him to hide money from the IRS. Even if in some alternative universe a reasonable person would believe such a proven liar and thief was credible, this has nothing to do with Russian election meddling.
The Russians are NOT Coming
It’s apparent to everyday Americans that the Manafort trial is a desperate and malicious prosecution against a man who briefly worked for Pres. Trump. But what makes this witch hunt an even greater national embarrassment is the obvious political bias shown by Mueller.
When Pres. Trump finally agreed to meet with Pres. Vladimir Putin, Mueller attempted to pollute the waters by releasing indictments against 12 Russian nationals. Yes, they live in Russia and will never set foot in an American courtroom. The Russians are not coming, and the move unmasked Robert Mueller.
Special Counsel Mueller is running a modern-day political witch hunt. His goal is to bring down a rightfully elected president, and he’s willing to hold his nose and pretend a liar, thief and adulterer is an honest man.
