In a report in The Independent, Twitter noted that President Donald Trump will soon become a private citizen, removing protections he has as a world leader. His potential Twitter ban would take place due to allegations of President Trump’s ongoing promotion of conspiracy theories, according to the publication.
Many of President Trump’s current tweets already appear with the label, “This claim about election fraud is disputed.” His status as America’s President currently includes President Trump under Twitter’s “World Leaders” policy developed in October 2019.
Twitter’s World Leaders policy includes: “…if a Tweet from a world leader does violate the Twitter Rules but there is a clear public interest value to keeping the Tweet on the service, we may place it behind a notice that provides context about the violation and allows people to click through should they wish to see the content.”
Despite Twitter’s policy that, “Our goal is to enforce our rules judiciously and impartially,” clear bias has been placed on President Trump over Joe Biden. For example, CNN reported Twitter’s “fact check” of President Trump’s statement that the changed election results in Antrim County, Michigan are evidence of massive fraud.
President Trump noted the Antrim case five times on the Tuesday of its release. Twitter flagged all five messages.
Never mind that the Antrim County case included an alleged software “glitch” that flipped more than 2,500 votes from President Trump to Joe Biden. Forget the Allied Security Operations Group report that showed a 68 percent error rate in Dominion software voting machines. According to Twitter’s judge and jury, Trump is the one spreading false information.
The irony of Twitter’s ongoing presidential attacks is that when they fact check President Trump’s messages, it polarizes Americans even more. A December Boston University study reported, “Our research suggests that the parties have inflated these corrections’ influence on public opinion. Rather than swaying public opinion, corrections to Trump’s posts, at least, may simply polarize the public further.”
In other words, as Twitter seeks to censor President Trump’s voice, his followers find this as a reason to increase their support. Conservatives have long cited cases of Twitter bias, whether shadow banning, fact checks or outright banishment from the platform. President Trump’s fact checks prove to many Americans that his message is the what the nation needs to hear.
Another recent move shows more ways Twitter has sought to silence President Trump. Last week, Twitter disabled the replies and likes on several of Trump’s tweets. Twitter later reported the change had been made inadvertently.
Apparently, “inadvertently” means Twitter disabled part of President Trump’s account until they were caught and public outcry took place.
By the way, when was the last time Joe Biden had his Twitter account fact checked? Has Kamala Harris seen problems with replies or likes on her tweets lately? What about Nancy Pelosi — or any Democrat for that matter?
The real fact check is that fact checking predominantly remains a rule used against conservatives, not Democrats. President Trump may need to make a full-blown move to another social platform after his presidency. Twitter has already warned their war with Team Trump has only begun.
