A black student union is taking the University of Wisconsin-Madison to task for failing to remove a 70-ton boulder that’s likely been on campus for since its inception. Why? Because the boulder once had a racist nickname.
The rock was originally named “Chamberlin Rock” after glaciologist and UW President Thomas Chamberlin. It was nicknamed a “n****rhead” in the 1920s. The derogatory term was commonly used at the time by geologists to refer to large, dark rocks. However, geologists weren’t the only ones to use it. Products ranging from soap to shrimp to chocolate-coated marshmallow treats were also given the nickname, which fell out of use in the 1960s as Americans embraced civil rights.

The rock in question likely hasn’t been referred to by its racist nickname for over fifty years, which means the black student union calling for its removal likely have never heard it being called by the offensive moniker. Even so, in today’s day and age, it’s never enough to simply correct one mistake and move on. Cancel culture now extends to inanimate objects that simply happened to have the wrong connotation at some point in time.
It’s not the first time the black student union has made outlandish demands or complained about their chosen university. The union made headlines not long ago for demanding the removal of a statue of former President Abraham Lincoln, an odd demand considering the fact that, up until now, President Lincoln has been viewed as a hero who played a huge role in ending slavery in the south. The statue wasn’t removed, but the union hasn’t rested, going on to complain about how few black students are admitted to the university and whining about “microaggressions” that include being looked at during a discussion about ethnic stereotypes.
You would think that such a student union would have more pressing matters to attend to. After all, unemployment is at record highs, black Americans are dying of COVID-19 at three times the rate of white Americans, and black parents all over the nation are struggling to supervise their children’s virtual education while holding down a job and paying bills. One has to wonder if the fixation with a dark-colored rock is more about getting publicity than actually doing something concrete to improve life.
Far-leftists have put a premium on “microaggressions”, lashing out at any little thing that might have been offensive at some point in time — or could possibly be offensive to someone in the future. The demand to uproot a 70-ton rock currently used by UW geoscience students is nothing short of absurd. At the same time, it’s sad that progressive university students are so coddled.
Tell these cream puffs to transfer to another school – if this all you can focus on, you need check your mental capacity.
How about we disband black student unions, clubs, fraternities, etc. They are racist and discriminate. Blacks want integration and equality, then no seperate “black”, just student union, etc.

Maybe the University can sell it to an Entity that can display the Rock and its History in a safer Place. Ah, how fondly I remember my college days. A few hours of classes each day with time to wander and socialize on a tranquil campus, plenty of time to study while eating lunch at the student union, living nearby in an area with other students and no parents or authorities, and no jobs or responsibilities. Money sent regularly by parents, scholarships, or student loans. So much free time to waste! I get it that these pampered college kids feel entitled to raise hell, but I know they all dread having to get real jobs to pay the bills and actually work(!) until they can retire. Yes, they have too much free time and too little responsibility. Reality will knock them all down with a vengeance!
If the university administration is unwilling to remove the 70-ton boulder and other stones that impede the movement of people, it is perfectly correct to declare these stones racist. If the stone is racist, then most likely it will finally be removed. Good would declare racists and stumps from felled trees.

If you allow yourself to live within the perception of a rock or statute which has no power over your current or future success, your mind is as lifeless as the rock, captive in a time and place most likely you never lived. When I worked my way through college I did not have time or concerns about the names or ROCKS. I think it is pastime we stand up to these spoiled brats who only want to use race as an issue, while embracing it rather than dealing with it.
The fact of the matter is the demise of Family creating useless dead beat dads, think about it, Look at the increase in Single mothers with children, who receive befits or entitlements for children and support the fathers or boyfriends. The idea is right but the results are not taking place. 60 years ago, this was not a problem in poor communities, Family, God, and Responsibility for themselves was 70% more prevalent than it is now even with 70% more racist problems.
